What is a testing technique? That question that comes to my mind when I’m asked to write something about testing techniques. According to ‘specialists’ testing techniques are required for the establishing tests and testing projects. But actually what specific a technique is remains unclear. Are they interpretations of methods? Are they specifically for testing? Are they perhaps unnecessary?

One thing that is clear is that the profit of testing techniques depend on the people which use them. But makes it you a lesser tester if you have no knowledge and experience with testing techniques? No, but perhaps a less efficient and effective tester when checking software. Testing techniques like a test design technique can really help you when checking software. With checking I mean ‘determining whether a created software product complies with its specifications.’

So learn testing techniques. Read book about them and look around on the Internet, there are even a few test (design) techniques on this blog. There is much to find about these issues. Though when you have learned a technique, make a movie of it (I’ll do it in the future). So others can also learn from you.

Sometimes it seems the use of testing techniques a goal in itself? After all, you can use them to do testing more efficiently and effectively. But is it really possible to use testing techniques to work on everything?

Testing techniques can be used to make your work as tester, test manager or test coordinator easier. But use them sparingly and use them properly!
